Written by: Kemdah Stroud (@Chiefsaveahoe) It's been a while since Harold Washington Library housed its weekly open mic, Lyricist Loft, in YouMedia; curated by the phenomenal Brother Mike. Wednesday easily became everybody's favorite day of the week, throughout high school; because we could not only be expressive, but we made friends from all over the city. Brother Mike created a time, and space, where teenagers could create; and I attribute much of his students' success and innovation to his mentoring. Sadly, YouMedia ended Lyricist Loft about two years back and tragically, the world lost Brother Mike Hawkins this past year.
Following the light of Brother Mike, the Social Experiment team revived city wide, high school creative initiative with "Open Mike". Although the team struggled to find a routine space, "Open Mike" probably couldn't be more at home than in Harold Washington Library. Most of the Social Experiment team were students under Brother Mike, and I'm sure he's smiling down on them from heaven. So attention all high school students! The Social Experiment team is hosting "Open Mike" tomorrow at Harold Washington Library. Don't miss out on this fantastic event, so meet in the Pritzker Auditorium by 4:45 to get on the performance list.
