Walking into Cellular Field was different this time: overalls galore, girls using both bathrooms equally, and a sea of the digit 3. The energy was distinctly new, yet beautifully comforting. Familiar faces speckled in a sea of fresh ones; Chicago locals showcasing talent and love.
Witnessing Chance the Rapper manifest his dreams in Magnificent Coloring Day, was glorious. Sitting in my seat along the baseball field, watching legends perform on its first music fest stage, was surreal.
Alicia Keys, John Legend, Francis and the Lights, Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, Skrillex, Tyler, the Creator, Common, Kanye West were all epic; but our hometown hero delivered something special. As Chance began his set, my skin raised with goosebumps. I still can't believe #MCD was not a dream. We've watched Chance the Rapper go from the Back to School Pack at YouMedia, to creating a moment in history our city will never forget. To observe somebody accomplish that impossible at such a young age is truly an inspiration. You could feel the love in Chance's heart oozing from his pores, connecting each and every person in the stadium. He was instructed not to forget his message throughout the show, and we're strongly aware Chance will never lose sight of his vision. Chance the Rapper: historic musician, groundbreaking activist, bonding agent, hometown hero, and healer. We appreciate all that you've accomplished in the name of blessings and love. You've brought hope to despair, giving rise to a sight the industry, and our city, has never deemed possible. Continue to carry your message, and bring light to the dark crevices. Watch both our hometown heroes perform "Ultra Light Beam" below.
