Meteoric MC JPEGMAFIA hits the U of I Independent Media Center's stage on Friday night at 7:45 p.m.
Baltimore’s JPEGMAFIA has steadily been making a name for himself this year, riding the momentum of the release of his project “Veteran” after making moves in the underground for years. The 28-year-old has a hard-knock way of spitting, and his experience drips through his often thought-provoking lyrics. He moved to Alabama as a kid, and he said the move had a large effect on his music, especially in the light of the racism he said he dealt with down south. He later served in the Air Force, being deployed in Iraq before spending time in Japan and Germany. In Japan, he began to build up a following, but moved back to the States, where he’s really started to buzz. The often roughshod, outlandish production over which he raps should make for an intriguing live performance, and you can expect him to bring the energy as well.
