When Chance the Rapper was suspended from school for 10 days (14,400 minutes if you will), he unleashed greatness that would leave a lasting impact on Chicago. This debut solo mixtape would put him on the map amongst the hip hop scene and become the nostalgic soundtrack to our adolescence. If Chance wasn’t handing out mixtapes outside of your high school then did you even go to a Chicago Public School?
Before its formal release, Chance spent months recording and promoting tracks from the project like Hey Ma and Prom Night. On November 26th, 2011 Chance hosted an unforgettable #10Day listening party (see the promo video here) at the esteemed LDRS which drew dozens of music-goers and a crowd waiting outside in the rain to see him perform. This event garnered hype for the budding MC and contributed something very unique and special to this generation of Chicago artists.
Fast forward to spring 2012. Only a week before spring break, Chance got suspended from his high school, Jones College Prep, for 10 days. Suddenly given ample time to work on his project, the young artist went into overdrive and spent much of his time in the YouMedia studio polishing his mixtape. On April 3rd, Chance the Rapper independently released 10 Day through various digital download websites like DatPiff and MixtapeMonkey. 6 years later and the mixtape has well over a million streams via SoundCloud and growing. What’s your favorite song off of 10 Day?
