No matter what, just remember that you’re a champion.
New Kingz’s Ali has had quite a year. In addition to pushing his craft at various open mics and venues across the city, he’s been going into the studio to create some heat with the SKIGH Mob collective, working on his debut solo EP, and generally dedicating himself to his passion. Still, Ali For the Go has been facing a more personal issue in his mother’s battle with stomach cancer. This emotional time for himself and his family was largely used as material for his The Native EP, which is set to drop this summer. Fighting past this struggle, his mother successfully went through surgery to remove tumors from her stomach. Inspired by someone so close to him battling her way to the top, the spitter/singer/songwriter decided to drop this loosie on us. “Champion” is Ali reminding himself and everyone listening to him that we have an ability and a duty to be great, we just need to accept that. The beat crafted by the increasingly productive CHI-VII feels like something your ears were always meant to hear, the song a truth that you always knew. Kawaakari’s mixing gives Ali a more synthy sound than he’s become known for, but it works really well here to convey his simple, but eloquent message. If you hadn’t been already, you should probably start betting on Ali, as I’d say we can expect to hear a lot more of him soon. Be on the look out for The Natives EP dropping in the coming weeks.
