This year was another year filled to the brim with great and innovating music, so naturally, our staff compiled a few of our favorite projects of the year from the most talented artists Chicago has to offer. Take a look for yourself and be sure to check out the work of these dedicated, talented artists!
Without further ado, here are our top five Chicago projects of 2017 (with honorable mentions):
South Florida artist Lajan Slim is back with this new single “Snow”, a story about his hustle from the trap to the stage. Lajan Slim’s hook, does a brilliant job of setting up the story; simple yet effective.
Atlanta rapper, Yung Bans has had a sensational year; consistently releasing music to the masses, including extraordinary music videos directed by Cole Bennett, or Lone Wolf. For “Brand New”, he links up with producer LeanBwoy to create a single meant to played in a UFO, on your back from Pluto.
Swagger Rite recruits superstar Ski Mask The Slump God and HXTXG, for this Sha Hustle produced single. Sha was definitely able to take the beat to Pluto, with it’s hard-hitting bass, and wavy synthesizers.
Chicago artist Kush Worthy put out a single titled “memories” awhile back. Teaming up with top area talent Luke Almighty for the production, Kush really hit a homer with this joint. He goes in over the melodious beat and weaves the tale of his rough childhood, speaking on his struggles in life and how the memories created by them have made him who he is today.
Chicago rapper BiGBODYFiJi put out a new track called “NO HALF STEPPiN” a couple weeks back, and it was just too notable to let it slide by without any comment. Fiji hopped on an eclectic Luchii beat and owned it in his typical fashion.
Chicago’s own CASSOBANDZ is back with a new single titled “Good Money”. The Decent Militia artist has kept the material coming constantly all year, and this joint is no different. Casso applies his flow over a jiggy beat, rapping about how getting money is good no matter where it comes from.
ZERO is back on our pages today with another slapper, “STAGE FRIGHT”. He teamed up with none other than Luke Almighty and Sammy L’s, who collaborated to produce a memorable headbanger of a beat.
Chicago artist Lil Moni recently dropped the video for one of his many collaborations with Cello2x, “Breadwinner”. The visual, shot by Dinero Films, sees Lil Moni stunting over on Michigan Avenue and also acts as a tribute to Cello, who was killed earlier this year.
