Chicago is not home to the dull, the diluted pounds of the Earth. It embraces with the widest set of arms the bold; the sounds that set trends, not follow them. This is evident in Chance the rapper, Smino, and now Ben Burden throws his name into that group with his EP’s self titled track “Concrete Maze”.
Over crisp and disorienting instrumentation, Burden himself can sound lost at certain points with a certain fear buried deep in his tone. Numerous vocal layers echo in the mix as he lets out the declaration of how he’s “running faster/Still can’t catch up/Lost in this concrete maze”. This lyric not only symbolizes Burden’s shift of location to the Windy City, but also represents his unique sound that he consistently harnesses with each track. This fear in his voice illustrates his race against time to find the maze’s exit and enter the promised land, away from the world that “made a mess of me”.
This track is the title track to Burden’s debut EP Concrete Maze. Peep it below and prep yourself for it’s release on January 11th.
