Closed Sessions has been a staple in the Chicago music scene for as long as one can remember. The current roster boasts Jamila Woods, Femdot, Kweku Collins and more. But one of the latest talents, Ajani Jones, proves his star burns as bright as any other on his latest EP 'Cocoons.'
In just under 20 minutes, Ajani evolves before our eyes and ears with a stunning and comprehensive body of work. The intro record “Crystal Drops” shows his lyrical prowess in full effect as he truly drops “crystals on em” with gems such as “Isolation in my own space like I’m A.I.”. As the six track project trucks on, we see the lone feature appearance in the form of Kweku Collins on “Pyramids”. The crooning hook on his search “looking for the pyramids” seems to be the quest to find the unobtainable and the spectacular.
By this point, each track has a unique feel, but as you approach the end you feel a sense of refinement within it. It seems not only as Ajani set a clearer definition for himself in general, his music also takes form and blossoms. His bouncy flow from earlier tracks has pin point accuracy, and production that had a raw and unfiltered feel to it now become tranquil and at peace with the transformation. This culminates in the outdo “Bloom”, with some stellar keys and chords are the backdrop for Ajani’s final set of bars focusing on growth and overall improvement. Ajani might have been working non stop on this record, but the final project shows him ready to leave the cocoon and spread his wings. Peep Ajani’s latest projects Cocoons up above and be ready for more from the young artist.
