Lil Yachty, an 18 year old Atlanta native, has surprised fans with the release of his debut full length mixtape, Lil Boat The Mixtape.
Even if you aren’t familiar with his music, you may recognize Yachty as he was featured in Kanye West’s presentation of Yeezy Season 3 at Madison Square Garden in February. Yachty was also recently spotted in the studio with A$AP Rocky and Tyler, the Creator suggesting his odd flavor of Atlanta rap music has already reached some of the top tastemakers in the game. Following the buzz that surrounded Yachty in the past few weeks, he released Lil Boat without prior notice. At 14 tracks, Lil Boat serves as somewhat of an introduction to Lil Yachty and his vibe. The intro track, “Just Keep Swimming” starts off with a Finding Nemo sample, then jumps into Yachty flowing over a beat that seamlessly balances an innocent melody with heavy 808’s. This balance is what much of what Lil Boat demonstrates, as on the remix to his single “Minnesota”, which has already appeared on OVO Sound Radio. Fellow ATL natives Young Thug, Quavo and Skippa Da Flippa join Yachty on the remix, with each adding their respective signature sounds. Perhaps the best example of Lil Yachty’s weirdness is on “Run/Running”, which has Yachty singing in autotune over a trapped out instrumental that samples music and sound effects from Super Mario 64. Check out Lil Boat via his Soundcloud and stay tuned for more from Lil Yachty.
