For Chicago's own A.K, music is more than just a way to make a living; it's a passion: a passion that he takes great pride in while recording, and capturing, the beautiful essence of the Chicago streets. A.K. has silently been killing it since the release of singles like, "Chiraq (Chicago Remix)" and "I Had"; but it goes without questioning that "Something To Prove" is the artist's true, and rightful, debut to the game.
Each of the five tracks on the EP are a vivid representation of his own personal artistic visions, as well as the city's. However, what truly separates this EP from others, is how immensely classic the project is, and in a naturally free flowing way, without the need for fugazzi soul samples and stereotypically retro beats. Line after line A.K. spits an infectious flow, that's both insightfully thought provoking and remarkably conscious.
Along with A.K.'s breakthrough performance, the production from Audible Doctor is as equally impressive. From the noteworthy dusty-sample imprints, to the combination of funkiness and soul, the Doc creates a refined platform that flawlessly showcases A.K.'s flow and delivery. I recently had the chance the catch up with the rising Chicago artist and ask him a couple questions about his craft. Here's what he had to say: When did you start making music and who were your early influences? "I've been writing music since a teenager. I've been recording music and taking it serious since about 2011. I'd say some of my musical influences growing up were Pharrell, Lauryn Hill, Lupe Fiasco, Common, Jay-Z, Nas, Kanye, R Kelly, Maroon 5 just to name a few." What aspect of you and your music sets you apart from other artists? "I'd say im different because of how raw i give it. I don't really hold nothing back everything you hear from me is all facts about my life and unlike these other artists i'll never speak fictional raps talking about and portraying things i've never done." Where did the title "Something To Prove" come from? "It's something I live by, it's simply means I have something to prove to myself in becoming one of the worlds best musicians ever, and to prove to the world that I'm great enough to be mentioned with the greats." What can we expect from A.K. in the near future? "More music, more videos, and another EP within the next month." His response to all of my questions only further demonstrates what kind of artist A.K. truly is and what separates him from so many others in the game. His sound, style, and unique outlook on life, easily make him one of Chicago’s next big acts and one to constantly watch.
