Written by: Kez The Dude (@KezTheDude) The day has finally come. After a tasteful documentary and a slew of soulful singles, Trap Genius by Tree has dropped via Noisey. For those who are not familiar with Tree, this project serves as one hell of an introduction. The Chicago artist has molded his dusty, soul sampled aesthetic into a sleek and relevant sound. Trap Genius upon first listen will absorb your ears like a sponge and squeeze your face until its squinched to the size of a squirrel. The opening track “Trap Genius” instantly turned my solemn half smile to an expression of pure shock. I looked as if I had smelled the scent of a skunk. The album is “The Street Album”. That claim does not dismiss Tree’s ability to craft an equally elegant and intelligent release. The project is ten deep and does not slack for a minute. The production which has been handled by the likes of The Dutchmaster and Tree himself, bumps in the whip and will definitely send up any fefe. The Grit of Tree’s voice is iconic. The MC has the uncanny ability of making the most stereotypical braggadocio rap line interesting. When I first heard Tree i noted how his style was almost incomparable and especially distinct from the sound other Chicago rappers were trying to achieve. Now old and younger listeners are starting to catch on. On a day where most are out voting for the next mayor of Chicago, Tree is being elected by the streets and music lovers alike as the voice of the people. 2015 is shaping up to be a hell of a year for new releases. Indulge in the newscaster sound byte riddled tale of the one and only “Trap Genius”.
