Chicago artist Ric Wilson is back with his first new music of 2018 in the form of his new single, “Split”. Wilson teamed up with fellow Chicago artist Sen Morimoto and North Carolina-based producer Hirsh, who supplied a beat filled with diverse synths and lively drums to make a song that sounds like spring.
He also lets the beat run out to a vibrant saxophone solo before Wilson trails off with his own final rendition of the hook. Though it’s got this warm feel, which is typical of Wilson’s work, the track is actually about a heart-wrenching debate within Wilson about whether to end a relationship that wasn’t going as he hoped. He weighs the decision, rapping, “split between choosing the world or choosing you, guess I’m addicted to picking my own noose, and now I’m split, split between what’s right and what’s wrong, I said I’m split, split between commitment and gone”. “Split” is yet another unique offering from Wilson, who is establishing himself as one of the most promising artists in Chicago with each release.
