Drill music might get the most nationwide recognition of all the burgeoning hip-hop scenes coming out of Chicago these days, but that doesn't mean that the city isn't offering up plenty of conscious rappers to help balance this out. Once such example is Ric Wilson, the man behind the excellent "Penny Raps" project, as well as a civil rights activist.
While attending The Movement For Black Lives National Convening in Cleveland, Ohio with BYP100, Wilson was a part of a crowd that erupted in protest after police tried to accuse a young black teen of being under the influence. What ensued was chaos, as police pepper sprayed and maced the crowd coming to the defense of the young boy. Once it was deemed that he was in fact not under the influence, police released him to the care of his mother, which protestors saw as a victory. Wilson said that the crowd soon began rejoicing and once "Alright" by Kendrick Lamar came on, it went into full celebration mode. He even went as far to say that "Alright" could possibly stand as the "We Shall Overcome" of this generation, with its uplifting lyrics and positive message. Let us know if you agree with Ric's statement and be sure to check for new music from the talented emcee, who seems to always keep himself busy.
