Tonight, St. Louis MC, Sal Calhoon drops his second solo mixtape, titled “BackYard DEMO”. Over the las couple of years, or so, Sal has been gaining traction as a member of NewFadZoo, an alternative rock/ rap influenced collective. A year ago, Sal dropped his first tape, titled “L.T.M.S.” , which has close to 150,000 listens on Soundcloud since its first drop. Over the past couple months, Calhoon has been putting on shows, and gearing up for the release of his new tape, spending copious amounts of time in the studio, to put together what is expected to be a successful secondary act.
The sound of the tape reflects the general sound that we are used to with Sal Calhoon. Dark, bass heavy beats, with some intermittent strings and keys provide the tempo and sound for most of the songs. He mixes his crooning, soulful voice, with bars over most of the tracks on the tapes, showcasing his abilities of being able to switch flows up, seamlessly. He blends the ability of being able to harmonize in an R&B sense, with trap flows about the life and times of someone on the come up.
Overall, this tape is a strong second coming, from a rapper who is expected to be on the rise. If you haven’t heard of Sal Calhoon, you will after BackYard gets its fair play. As 2015 continues to grow on, we will see more and more good music drop, and Sal Calhoon is continuing to get the ball rolling with “BackYard”.Tonight, St. Louis MC, Sal Calhoon drops his second solo mixtape, titled “BackYard”.
