Tree is redefining the meaning of “Trap Music”. The term was coined by journalists and artists alike. Now, Trap Music or rather its aesthetics dominate rap radio.
The genre and its drums have crossed over into Pop music and Electronic Music. The sound has been at the forefront of what inspired and Drill Music as well as Soul Trap. These styles, genres, labels and words are just words. However, these words carry meaning. These words carry associations. The content of Trap Music is often littered with drug references, excessiveness and exaggerated moments of violence. While “turning up” to music people will often turn up with a substance of their choice.
With ideas surrounding the intersection between drugs and music we take a look at the new art from Tree and APJ.
In 2015, Tree released Trap Genius: The Documentary, Trap Genius: The Album, and Trap Genius: Official Video. The Soul Trap brand is still alive but has morphed into something darker . All of this strategic and repetitive marketing has me wondering; What is Trap Genius? And while i watched the montage of middle aged black men snorting white powder and smoke pipes, I thought maybe a “Trap Genius” was a specific type of person. Maybe its the old man that burned aways his bright intellect inhaling batches of his supply. Then again maybe Tree is the true Genius. For he is the one, who has manouvered his way into the homes and traps of these men. These visual really makes you question the product that Tree and APJ are serving us. I can’t help but to take notice of the social decay. We are forced to see the flaws of men. I don’t think the two words “Trap Genius” are ironic. I think the words are indicative of the harsh realities surrounding our country’s ever present drug culture.
The Official Video is meant for the brain and meant to be puzzled over. Watch for yourself and try to define what it means to be a “Trap Genius”.
